January/February 2022 E-Newsletter

A Message from our Executive Director
Welcome to 2022!
January absolutely flew by, and we are already well underway with our member events for the year. We have a full calendar of webinar (and hopefully some face to face) events scheduled for 2022, covering a variety of key risk management topics.
When you attend an RMA Australia webinar, you join 200+ risk colleagues for a one-hour session on a current topic with some of Australia’s most senior risk professionals. You get access to their current information and have the opportunity to ask questions and rate the event via our LIVE Q & A and poll feature.
In addition to this, if you cannot attend a webinar, you can access the content via the Members Only section on our website. Here, you will find a library of content available to you to absorb at any time to further your professional development.
Our first event for 2022, Navigating Cryptocurrency Safely, hosted by CBA, had 300+ registrations. We thank John Fogarty, Executive General Manager, Financial Crime Compliance (CBA) and Sophie Gilder, Head of Blockchain & Digital Assets (CBA) for their insight and Danny John, Head of External Communications (CBA) for moderating and leading such relevant and interesting discussion.
The Genpact Australia Risk Consulting Team hosted our second February event on ‘Risk Experience – Transforming Belief In Risk’. The session dived into some meaty topics, with excellent attendee feedback.
In March we will be hosting our annual International Women’s Day (IWD) event hosted by Westpac and looking ahead to April, KPMG is hosting a webinar on Third-Party Risk. To ensure you don’t miss out on any of these webinars and other events, ensure that your RMA Australia membership is current.

Spotlight on: Kristen Hansen
We recently caught up with Kristen Hansen, Director –
Risk Consulting for PwC and Events Sub Committee member. Here’s what she had to say about her risk career and the challenges facing riskprofessionals in our industry.

What are the 3 – 4 primary tasks of your role, Director – Risk Consulting, PwC?
On a day-to-day basis, my primary focus is leading engagement teams to deliver work
for our clients. That said, my days are never the same! Whether it be running stakeholder workshops, working with the different competencies across PwC, or understanding how technology can help deliver engagement efficiencies, the work can be fast paced. I have learned to be ready for anything to come my way.
Another important aspect of my role is to make sure I stay connected and accessible to members in the Risk Consulting team. Due to the nature of our work, a lot of my colleagues are spread out across different client engagements. However, I think it’s important to stay connected and foster a sense of community. Even if it’s just grabbing a coffee or having a quick chat with a member in the team, these moments matter.
Finally, it’s important to stay up to date with the issues facing our clients. I try to link up with my contacts wherever possible and understand what is front of their mind. Additionally, being a member of the RMA Events Sub-Committee provides a fantastic way to stay informed of the issues impacting the Risk Management community.
How long have you worked in Risk Management?
I started my career working as an Auditor in San Francisco. Subsequently, I moved to Australia and joined PwC’s Assurance practice.
What are some of your greatest career achievements in Risk?
At the start of the Pandemic, I lead an engagement that had a positive impact on the community. The job involved working with very challenging data sets and having to communicate complex issues to a wide range of stakeholders. However, being able to solve a set of complicated problems was hugely rewarding, not to mention I was very proud of the societal benefits we delivered at a time when it was needed the most.
What do you like most about being a member of the RMA Australia Events Sub Committee?
Since joining the Events Sub Committee in 2020, I have been impressed by the breadth of content that has been presented. As a member of the committee, I enjoy the challenge of identifying topics that have yet to be explored as well as putting together a panel of speakers with an interesting point of view.
In your opinion, what are the biggestchallenges facing Risk professionals in our industry?
As a risk professional, I see many challenges around data and how to use it in meaningful ways. The work we do can become that much more complex when data is hard to access or the quality of the information has been compromised. To that point, it’s becoming the norm to partner with my colleagues from our Data and Analytics Team. However, if managed well, data can be a strategic tool and an asset to better manage risks.
What are RMA Australia’s biggest challenges in 2022?
I think the RMA has done a fantastic job adapting to the challenges of the pandemic by hosting events over webinar. That said, we should continue explore new ways to leverage digital communication channels to reach new members, specifically younger millennials. I know the RMA has some exciting plans in store for 2022. I won’t give anything away, but we have a big year ahead!
