December 2021 E-Newsletter

A Message from our Executive Director
Welcome to the December E-Newsletter,
More changes have occurred over the past six months than anyone could have anticipated. The global pandemic disrupted people’s lives, businesses, industries, communities, and cities. Our local economy was slowed by the national and state lockdown and lockout measures to protect our health, and how and where people worked, studied, and interacted changed.
Here at RMA Australia, we continued to deliver monthly, sometimes bi-monthly webinar events to ensure our member base remained updated with local and global risk trends in a COVID world.
Here’s a look back at 2021:
We held a record 20 webinars, with 3000 people viewing these live and 5000 watching on demand via our member library.
We welcomed 8 international speakers to our platform, adding new depth and a global lens to our risk topics
We convened 39 meetings for our 9 specialist risk forums.
A record 95 CRO’s from 38 institutions attended our CRO Conference. Thank you to Warren Dunn and KPMG for hosting this online event and all our expert speakers.
As we approach the end of 2021, I want to thank you for your continued support. In a year with its challenges, I, along with the RMA Australia team members, Kristie Stark (Events & Membership), Jill Stewart (Marketing), Selina Coi (Forums Manager) and Michelle Lee (Secretariat), would like to wish you a safe and happy Christmas. We look forward to working with you in 2022.

Spotlight on: Katharine Goulstone
Katharine Goulstone, Partner, Deloitte Risk Advisory is the recently appointed Chair of the RMA Australia Events Sub Committee Group (ESC). This fundamental group meets monthly to plan the webinar topics and speakers. We recently caught up with Katharine and asked her a few questions on what excites her most about the Events Sub Committee Group.
1) What does a typical day look like for you in your role as a Partner, Deloitte Risk Advisory?
Within Deloitte’s broader Risk Advisory practice, I focus on Financial Risk and Regulation. I help financial services organisations implement regulatory change and respond to regulatory inquiry. This work can be reactive in dealing with historic or enforcement issues, or proactive in enabling organisations to accelerate their regulatory compliance and monitoring capabilities. Interpreting regulatory compliance requirements in the context of a complex organisation necessarily requires specialists that have a deep understanding of that organisation’s business, systems, processes and controls.
I am passionate about developing solutions that efficiently deliver risk outcomes, which means I get to spend a lot of my time with risk analytics, automation and technology experts in our business. On a typical day I will spend half my time with clients and half my time collaborating with Deloitte colleagues.
2) What attracted you to the RMA Australia Events Sub Committee (ESC)?
The RMA Australia is a respected brand across risk professionals. We all benefit where we share insights and learnings across the risk management ecosystem and have the opportunity to consider these within the context of our own industries and organisations.
I have really enjoyed getting to know the terrific risk management professionals on the events sub-committee – the enthusiasm is great. It will be a privilege to contribute to creating opportunities for members to connect and share networks and build knowledge of the profession.
3) As Chair of the (ESC), what would you like to see RMA Australia do more of in 2022?
2021 was an enormous year in risk – there is so much for us to talk about across the risk community!
Members should expect a line up of topical events in the new year (spoiler alert) including crypto, automation and ESG. We were grateful for member feedback around the convenience and accessibility of online events and the inclusion of international perspectives. Members should expect to see RMA Australia events hitting the diary in this format as well as some in-person and hybrid events to ensure members have the opportunity to connect. If members would like to hear more about topics, I would love to connect.
