Our annual International Women’s Day this month, hosted by Westpac, focused on the important topic of Financial Abuse and Family and Domestic Violence. Catherine Thrum, Chief Risk Officer, Group Functions and Services, Westpac and RMA Australian Board Director, moderated the event, asking some of the tough questions on what role can Financial Institutions play in Financial Abuse and Family and Domestic Violence. Thanks to our presenters, Carolyn Bond AO, Economic Abuse Reference Group and Tasha Chye, Westpac for sharing their experience working with family and domestic violence victims.

Executive Director

Spotlight on: Zeynep Turesin Soylu

We recently caught up with Zeynep Turesin Soylu, Associate Director, TPRM, KPMG and Events Sub Committee member. Here’s what she had to say on her risk career and the challenges facing risk professionals in our industry.

What are your role’s 3 – 4 primary tasks as Associate Director, TPRM, KPMG?

As a leader in KPMG, my primary role is to:

  • Provide value for our clients to manage, optimise or mitigate risks and build a strong, business-aligned risk framework for sustainable growth.
  • As new tools and technologies are constantly disrupting industries, utilise innovation as a key differentiator to drive better solutions to our clients and enable well-informed organisational decisions.
  • Connect locally and globally to enable experience sharing and learning from each other to utilise this collected knowledge and skill set to build better solutions and up to date insights.
  • Invest in our people and create market luminaries who are known trusted advisors in our market.

What attracted you to the RMA Australia Events Sub Committee (ESC)?

I am an avid learner and a huge advocate for continuous learning. I always aim to connect the dots between my personal growth journey and organisational strategy to contribute to business results while improving my skills. I believe RMA events are a great way to provide these opportunities to our members. I am amazed by my peers on the committee and their dedication to providing up to date insights about risk management matters.

You are hosting an upcoming RMA Australia webinar on “Outlook in Third-Party Risk Management”, what can members expect on this webinar?

Our session will discuss the upcoming challenges and priorities across Third-Party Risk Management, utilising KPMG’s recent Global Survey on TPRM Outlook 2022. Our panellists will deep dive into learnings from the global survey, utilising multiple lenses across the supply chain, ESG, technology and forensics.

In your opinion, what are the biggest challenges facing Risk professionals in our industry?

We can name many challenges, from evolving risk landscape to regulatory changes or ongoing impacts of Covid disruptions. However, I believe the biggest challenge facing Risk professionals is maintaining a balancing act between business partnering and driving sound risk decisions in the organisations. We should learn to champion positive change.

What are RMA Australia’s biggest challenges in 2022?

I would hesitate to call this a challenge because I know Board is working tirelessly around this: To continue innovating and finding better ways to support members for growth. As we are remerging from Covid and its long-lasting implications, we need to utilise all learnings and drive efficient learning, networking and experience sharing opportunities.
