October 2021 E-Newsletter

A Message from our Executive Director

Welcome to the October E-Newsletter,

Firstly, I would like to touch on the success of our recent CRO Conference. We had a record 95 CRO’s from 38 institutions in attendance. Thank you to Warren Dunn and KPMG for hosting this online event and all our expert speakers.

In addition to this, I would like to welcome our first New Zealand member, ASB Bank, to our global member community. We look forward to welcoming other institutions from New Zealand soon.

It’s been another busy couple of months at RMA Australia, with multiple webinar events running. Our webinars are complex to run, with presenters often dialling in from many remote locations around Australia and worldwide. We recently had presenters dial in from three different time zones in America. Yesterday’s event on Building Skills For the Future of Work, hosted by PwC, was another example of the excellent combined efforts of our events, marketing team and production team Livecrowd.

Our final October webinar, hosted by KordaMentha – The Half Time COVID Scorecard for Businesses: Financial Restructuring, Transformation and ‘Learning to Live with COVID’ is one not to be missed! It will focus on how the past two years has created unique challenges for businesses. After two years of turbulence, uncertainty, and challenging economic conditions, an expert panel will discuss the critical turnaround factors. The panel features Nikki Smythe, Partner, Finance, Herbert Smith Freehills, Peter Deans, Consultant, Creator Founder 52 Risks, Jodie Hamilton, Credit Risk Management, Bendigo and Adelaide Bank, Susan Hodgkinson, Group Chief Credit Officer, Westpac and former RMA Australia Chair and Executive General Manager – Major Client Group, Business Banking Commonwealth Bank, Chris Williams.

Finally, I would like to welcome Chris Linde, Group Chief Compliance Officer, Chief Risk Officer – People, Conduct & Culture (NAB), to the Board and thank outgoing NAB Board member Kerrie Noonan for her outstanding service. Kerrie will commence a new role at IAG as Chief Risk Officer for their Direct Insurance Australia division on 3 November 2021.

Spotlight on: Emily Perry

Each year, RMA Australia proudly sponsors an Award at Macquarie University to assist with the development of emerging risk professionals. This month we caught up with the recipient of the Best Performance in the unit Financial Risk Management in 2020 Master of Applied Finance (Sydney) scholarship, Emily Perry.

What organisation do you work for?

I work for the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA). I joined the graduate program in 2010. I have worked in several areas, with most of my time spent in the Financial Markets Group and Economic Group.

What is your current role?

My current title is Senior Economist in a section called ‘Asian & International Macroeconomics’ within the RBA’s Economic Analysis department. The team is responsible for monitoring and understanding economic developments in overseas economies. This includes economic activity, labour markets, inflation, commodity prices, trade, and so on. Our work supports the RBA’s understanding of developments and issues in the overseas economy, which feeds into outputs that go to the Reserve Bank Board that makes monetary policy decisions.

What are the main aspects of your role on a day to day basis?

Day to day, my main responsibilities involve managing the sub-team that analyse economic developments in China’s economy, global commodity prices and developments related to East Asia and trade.  Our team’s main outputs include contributing to papers written for the Reserve Bank Board, which makes decisions on monetary policy stance. We also contribute to the quarterly Statement on Monetary Policy and Bulletin article publications. My team also does a lot of ‘behind the scenes’ work to ensure that we have a thorough understanding of developments and issues in areas that we analyse. This includes understanding any implications for the Australian economy, or lessons we can learn from overseas experiences.

What area of risk management are you most interested in?

I thoroughly enjoy learning about all aspects of risk management, including frameworks for thinking about risk management and how important good risk management is to all organisations. If I had to pick one area, I really enjoyed learning about banks’ balance sheets and how banks manage interest rates and liquidity risk. This definitely enhanced my interest in how banks and corporates fund themselves and manage the associated risks.

What did it mean to you to win the MAFC Sponsored Prize – Best Performance in the unit Financial Risk Management in 2020 Master of Applied Finance (Sydney)?

The course was very interesting and I worked hard, so I was delighted to hear that I won the prize. The content in this course will definitely be transferrable for whatever roles I hold throughout my career.
