RMA Australia

August 2021 E-Newsletter

A Message from our Executive Director

Welcome to the August E-Newsletter,

It’s been a busy month at RMA Australia with two webinar events and our Annual General Meeting (AGM).

Following the AGM, I would like to welcome Laura Box, Partner, Risk Consulting PwC to the RMA Australia Management Committee. Details of the AGM can be found on our website.

In the first August webinar Money Mules in Australia and how the Market is Responding to the Challenge, we explored what a Mule is, why Mules are an issue for banks in Australia and Ian Crofts, Associate Partner, EY, led a discussion on how banks are responding to the challenge.

Our second webinar, Risky Choices, hosted by Macquarie Group, showed how you can apply various ethical lenses to dilemmas you may encounter as a risk professional in the financial services industry. Dan Ostermeyer, Macquarie Group and Cris Parker from The Ethics Alliance and The Banking & Finance Oath, gave specific examples via role-play. This format was extremely well received. We thank those that rated our event 4.5/5!

Thank you again to everyone who is using our new LIVE webinar rating system. This feature replaces the post-event surveys, so make sure you tell us what you think of our content, speakers and webinar structure. Your feedback is important to us. We encourage you to provide it at all our webinars and events.

Recent analysis indicates that many of our members also access our webinars post event via our on demand webinar library. This means that with bi-monthly national webinar events, we have quadrupled our attendee numbers. See below for information on how to access.

Spotlight on: Laura Box

This month we caught up with our newest Board member, Laura Box, Partner – Risk Consulting at PwC Australia.

What are two primary aspects of your role as a Partner, Risk Consulting at PwC?

On a day-to-day basis, I help a number of organisations in financial services to solve complex, multi-faceted problems and transform their operations. I am passionate about bringing global insights to drive maturity and help these organisations move away from litigation and customer remediation programmes in respect of legacy business issues. This involves understanding the core business processes, systems and data flows that exist within their organisation. I then work with clients to redesign and automate their operational processes with the necessary controls embedded to ensure regulatory compliance and fair customer outcomes are consistently delivered in their go-forward business.

I also lead a number of engagements that require specialists with an understanding of risk, compliance and technology. These skill sets are in high demand and require a strong focus on developing our people through on-the-job training, PwC training courses and through access to specialist courses offered by organisations such as the RMA.

What attracted you to the RMA Australia board?

The RMA has a well-established and respected brand across risk professionals. For me personally, I found the insights into Australia-specific issues that are relevant for the financial services industry particularly helpful as I established myself in Australia after a transfer from PwC UK over six years ago. The opportunity to join the RMA Board is a real privilege to be able to steer the direction of risk management practice as it continues to evolve. I hope this will also enable me to connect with and help others establish networks, build their knowledge of the risk management profession and develop skills that are fundamental to their career success.

What would you like to see RMA Australia do more of in 2021?

The RMA is known for organising extremely high calibre events that are informative and are a wonderful opportunity to meet others in our profession. I would love to see this reputation continue to grow in 2021 and provide further opportunities for the incredibly talented risk professionals coming through to build their careers. I’d also like to see us working together to develop thought leadership on how we can innovate using technology, automation and capability uplift to change how we think about traditional risk, compliance and governance.
