2024 May E-Newsletter
A Message from our Executive Director
Dear RMA Australia Members,
Welcome to the May edition of our newsletter and welcome to our new member Allianz.
Coming up, RMA Australia is pleased to present a two-part series on “Strategies for difficult conversations” hosted by CBA. Part one will be hosted in person with networking; part two will be held via webinar.
As risk professionals, challenge is a key part of our roles. While this means we need to have difficult conversations at times, many of us can find ourselves dreading and even avoiding them, reducing our ability to operate effectively. Removing all discomfort isn’t possible or even the objective, but we can develop mindsets and practices that improve our level of skill and reduce apprehension and interpersonal friction.
Join Dr Stephanie Burns for a two part series of lectures on this topic, where you will learn insights and strategies to apply when risk challenge is needed. Learn more about Dr Stephanie Burns below.
As always, we encourage you to stay engaged with RMA Australia by attending our upcoming networking webinars, forums and events.

SPOTLIGHT ON…
Michael Smith, Head of Compliance, Operational Risk and Operational Risk Capital (ANZ Bank) | RMA Operational Risk Forum Chairperson.
Which RMA Australia Forum are you involved in and what is your role? – Operational Risk Forum Chairperson.
What is the purpose of this Forum?
To meet your peers across industry and provide a forum for members to share insights, current and emerging challenges and how they are being contemplated.
How long have you been involved in RMA Australia’s Forums?
I have been involved in both the RMA operational risk and compliance forums for the last 3 years.
In your opinion, what are the biggest challenges facing Risk professionals in our industry in 2024?
Pace and scale of change, needing to do more with less and, as a group of professionals, having our expertise sought concurrently across a number of programs whilst juggling the ‘BAU’ (if there is such a thing anymore!). Fortunately, we are in an innovative window with emerging technology that, if harnessed in the right way – presents an opportunity for the profession to work even more efficiently and effectively.
