August 2022 E-Newsletter

A Message from our Executive Director

Welcome to the August E-Newsletter, This month we saw the successful re-introduction of face to face RMA Australia events. The first ones since early 202.

The Hon. Ambassador Joe Hockey (ret.) delivered a highly engaging and enthusiastic presentation. His anecdotes were unique and relevant, and importantly he wove the risk coefficient throughout his address.

RMA Australia members gathered in person and online in Sydney and Melbourne to hear from Joe Hockey.

We were pleased to be able to offer the opportunity to network with other risk colleagues again after such a long break. I would like to thank Warren Dunn, Zeynep Turesin Soylu and the team at KPMG for leading the way with face to face events post COVID-19.

I would also like to acknowledge the feedback from members around continuing our webinar events and the face to face events program. One of the benefits of the COVID-19 work from home movement is that we were able to reach a much greater number of our members across Australia, who might not have otherwise been able to attend an event if not in their City.

We are currently planning our 2023 events schedule and will consider all feedback.

Next Tuesday, 30th August, CBA will host “The role of risk in protecting customers and communities” in Sydney. If you are unable to attend in person, a recording of the event will be uploaded to the member area on our website and available for a limited time to watch on demand.

This month we spotlight Joshua Vella, winner of the Macquarie University 2021 ‘RMA Prize for Outstanding Performance in Financial Risk Management’. Congratulations Joshua, we wish you the best of luck in your career.

SPOTLIGHT ON

This month, we spotlight Joshua Vella, the recipient of the Macquarie University 2021 ‘RMA Prize for Outstanding Performance in Financial Risk Management’.

Congratulations on being offered a graduate position at ANZ next year. What are you most looking forward to?

I’m looking forward to the challenge of trying to make a difference in one of the largest financial institutions in Australia. For me, this will be most achievable when working in a team on projects, aiming to deliver results that will help ANZ maintain its status as the number one institutional bank in Australia.

What area of risk management are you most interested in?

I enjoy most areas of risk management, but my two favourites are liquidity risk and credit risk management. I believe this is because these types of risk can be managed more effectively through thorough financial analysis and prudent decision making. In contrast, market risk is often very hard to manage and control.

In your opinion, what are the biggest challenges facing Risk professionals in our industry?

I believe the emergence of cyber security and ESG risks are risk professionals’ biggest challenges. Shareholders are increasingly demanding that large organisations establish effective ESG initiatives and policies to ensure that they can sustain long term value in a rapidly changing world.

How much do you know about RMA Australia?

Before being awarded the Risk Management Association prize, I knew very little about RMA Australia. However, after speaking to Lynn Donohue (NAB Risk) and Elizabeth Sheedy (Professor at Macquarie University), I became aware of the opportunities offered by RMA Australia, enabling professionals to engage and interact with one another whilst enhancing their risk management skills, knowledge and capabilities.

What did it mean to you to win the MAFC Sponsored Prize – Best Performance in the unit Financial Risk Management in 2021 Master of Applied Finance?

Being awarded the Risk Management Association Prize for the best performance in the undergraduate subject Financial Risk Management (Bachelor of Applied Finance and Economics) was extremely important. Many students consider this subject to be the most difficult in the degree. My success reflects my hard work and ability to apply effective learning strategies to the most difficult concepts.
