Padma Raman—Chief Executive, Australian Human Rights Commission
Padma is the Chief Executive of Australia’s national human rights institution, the Australian Human Rights Commission. Padma has a long established career committed to protecting and advancing human rights. Prior to her current role, Padma established the Victorian Law Reform Commission, which she ran for nine years. Padma sits on a number of boards including the Governance and Advisory Board for the Australian National Contact Point under the OECD Guidelines for Multinational Enterprises.
Emma Penzo – Policy Director – Australian Banking Association
Emma takes a fresh, strategic perspective to policy setting and covers the Corporate Responsibility, Governance, Culture, Remuneration and Accountability (GCRA), Climate Risk, and Digital banking portfolios. She has led the establishment of the ABA’s Modern Slavery Working Group. She has rich executive experience in banking strategy, product strategy and organisational change and has worked for local and international banks, and credit unions. She is also a seasoned governance practitioner with over 10 years’ experience on NGO boards and committees in education, foreign aid, and remediation. She is writing her PhD on the influence of international governance on Australian bank remuneration practices.
Mans Carlson-Sweeny, Head of ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) Research at Ausbil Investment Management, Chairman-elect of the RIAA Human Rights Working Group, Federal Government Modern Slavery Advisory Panel
Måns leads Ausbil’s ESG Research Team who take an active approach to engaging Australia’s listed companies on environment, social and governance issues. As a trained analyst, Måns also leads Ausbil’s integration of proprietary ESG scoring, research and ratings within Ausbil’s top-down bottom-up valuation approach so that ESG is fundamental in all of Ausbil’s investment decisions. Måns has been with Ausbil since 2015. Prior to Ausbil, Måns was the Senior ESG Research Analyst at AMP Capital, following positions at Carnegie Investment Bank, Macquarie Bank and Accenture, having begun his career in 2004. Måns is well known for producing and presenting consistent, high-quality ESG research covering the Australian market, and he has published numerous, highly regarded insight papers on a wide range of ESG issues. Måns has also been a member of the PRI Australia Network Advisory Committee in Australia.
Måns holds a Bachelor of Science (Major in Business Administration) and Master of Finance degree both from Gothenburg School of Economics, and an MBA International from Griffith University. In 2019, Måns was honoured by Anti-Slavery Australia with a Certificate of High Commendation for contribution to identifying the risk modern slavery in investment activities and promoting better practices and awareness in the investor community. Måns is currently on a panel of experts advising the Australian government on the effective implementation of the Modern Slavery Act (2018) and was previously on a panel of experts assisting the Australian government to write the guidance for the same legislation.
Richard Boele, Lead Partner, KPMG Banarra, Human Rights and Social Impact Consulting
To say Richard is passionate about human rights is something of an understatement. Richard has spent most of his work life championing the causes of the vulnerable and under-represented in a way that few do, most aptly demonstrated in almost 15 years running his own human rights consultancy, Banarra.
Richard draws on his cutting-edge social sustainability insights to help Boards and their chief executives navigate the inherent social risks associated with increasingly global and diverse operating contexts. His particular strengths are the social and governance dimensions of sustainability and leading large consultancy assignments in socially and politically complex environments. Richard understands the importance of teamwork. ‘When you’re looking to provide advice around difficult and grey areas such as social impact and human rights you have to take a team-based approach because the issues are just so complex. No single person has the solution.’
His goal is to see the corporate responsibility to respect human rights mainstreamed, and he believes KPMG is a fantastic platform from which he can contribute to that.
