About the Speaker:
Bill Evans, Chief Economist, Westpac
William (Bill) Evans is a graduate of Sydney University (BEc. Hons I and University Medal) and the London School of Economics (M.Sc.), where he was a Commonwealth Scholar. He has worked as a Research Manager for the Reserve Bank of Australia, Treasurer at the Commonwealth Bank of Australia, and prior to joining Westpac in 1991, was Director and Head of Financial Markets at Schroders Australia Limited for 8 years.
Bill joined Westpac in 1991 in the position of Chief Economist and Head of Research. During his time at Westpac he has also spent 2 years in New Zealand as Head of the Institutional Bank with responsibility for Westpac’s corporate and financial markets businesses.
He is currently Managing Director Economics. He is the Bank’s economic spokesman and is responsible for all of the Bank’s economic research. Bill travels frequently, advising Westpac’s customers on the Australian economy and financial markets. He has developed many important contacts in the U.S, Europe and Asia.
Bill was Chairman of the Australian Business Economists for eight years and is now a life member.
About the Moderator:
Catherine Thrum, Acting General Manager, Governance and Assurance, Westpac
Catherine is Acting General Manager, Governance and Assurance at Westpac Banking Group. In this role, Catherine is responsible for Risk Governance, Risk Frameworks and Appetite, Risk Culture, Prudential Governance and Risk and Credit Assurance.
Catherine is Westpac’s representative on the Risk Management Association Management Committee, has previously Chaired the Committee and is currently the Secretary. In this role, Catherine has led the Risk Management Association Senior Women in Risk Roundtable.
Catherine’s key areas of interest include best practice risk governance, risk culture and strategy. A strong supporter of women in risk, Catherine mentors a number of promising young Risk professionals.
Prior to her current role, Catherine held various roles within Westpac including in Credit as Head of the Commercial Credit team and Head of Credit Strategy and Policy team, in Group, as Head of Credit Policy and Risk Governance; and in the Institutional Bank in both the structured asset-backed finance and debt capital markets businesses.
Catherine has a business degree from the University of Technology and has completed AGSM Executive Programs in Leadership and Strategy.
