RMA Honour for Michael Codling – Life Membership Presentation

RMA Honour for Michael Codling – Life Membership Presentation

Michael Codling Life Membership

Presentation by Robert Molyneux, Chairman, RMA Australia (full text)

Mike Codling's passion for developing people has been a hallmark of his career. His passion for risk management is his career. Combining the two comes naturally for him.

Across the industry, both within PwC and the banking and finance community more broadly are people who have benefited from Mike's knowledge and genuine interest in helping them develop.

It’s no surprise then that Mike was one of the founding committee members of the RMA in 2004. Along with other members of the risk community including one of other life members, Mick Leonard from CBA and Rob Nimmo it was decided that Australia needed an mechanism to bring risk people together where they could learn from their peers and each other. And so RMA Australia was formed based on the US model that saw RMA Australia form an association with RMA in the US that continues today.

One of the unique features of the RMA in Australia is that it allows accountants and professional service firms to be members. Mike was one of the key architects of this model and I am sure you will all agree that the involvement of PwC, Ernst and Young and KPMG has contributed to the success not just the RMA but of the broader industry in Australia.

During his time as a member of the Management Committee Mike has helped guide the Association in all respects including

  • Promoting membership across the banking community, which has seen the membership numbers grow year on year
  • Contributing to the development of the events and other member services – the strategy days where his peers got together to discuss how the RMA could help meet their needs were always great fun for him
  • Actively engaging in the governance of the Association which saw him serve as Vice President for several years until his retirement in August 2011.

Mike has always regarded networking as an important ingredient in developing ones’ career. There are no doubt many in this room have met Mike at one the RMA’s member networking events as he always makes an effort to attend when he can. You may also have gotten to know that he has a rather quirky sense of humour that can get him into hot water from time to time.

And its not just for the red wine - which we know he enjoys - it really is because he values the events as a means of meeting others and through this further understand the challenges the industry faces.

Mike’s decision last year to stand down from the committee was not an easy one for him as contributing to the RMA was seen as part of his professional life. His role within PwC as a member of the Board of Partners and as signing partner on the Westpac audit reflects the high regard in which he is held by colleagues as well as his peers in the industry. No doubt Mike would hope that the RMA will help make a small contribution to those in the room achieving their personal career ambitions.

We would now like to formally present Mike with his Life Membership certificate of the RMA. No presentation would be complete without an accompanying bottle of red to say thank you Mike, for your very significant contribution to the RMA and the risk careers of so many.
